A one-book reading program gives readers a shared story to gather around. Schools can connect classrooms and grade levels, while libraries can bring families and community members into the same conversation. The book becomes a starting point for discussion, creative programming, learning, and connection.

But when a school, district, library system, or entire community is invited to participate, providing everyone with access to the same title can be challenging.

With One Book Links, Comics Plus® district and library administrators can promote any title in their collection across an entire community using a single shareable link.

Tips for Planning a Successful One Book Program

How It Works

Getting started takes just a few steps:

  1. Generate a shareable URL for any title in your Comics Plus collection.
  2. Distribute the link through newsletters, emails, websites, social media, QR codes, event materials, or other promotional channels.
  3. When readers click the link and log in, Comics Plus automatically routes them to the title within their assigned school or library collection.

With Comics Plus’s unlimited, simultaneous access, One Book Links make it possible for an entire community to read together without holds, waitlists, or borrowing limits. It makes access easier and more affordable, so you can focus on creating experiences that bring your reading community together.

Tips for Planning a Successful One Book Program

Easy access is an important starting point, but the strongest one-book programs pair that access with a clear purpose and thoughtful programming. Here are a few ways to turn one shared title into an experience readers want to join.

Start With a Clear Purpose and Goals

The strongest shared reading programs begin with more than a popular title. They begin with a clear reason for bringing readers together and a shared understanding of what success should look like. Your purpose explains why the program matters. Your goals give your team specific outcomes to work toward and measure.

Beyond building reading culture and connection, a one book program might aim to:

  • Support literacy, learning, or community engagement goals

  • Encourage conversations among readers of different ages and backgrounds

  • Introduce a new format, genre, or perspective

  • Inspire creative projects, events, or real-world action

Defining your purpose and goals early can guide title selection, programming, promotion, and success. It also makes it easier to communicate the program’s value to educators, administrators, library staff, families, community organizations, and other partners.

Choose a Title and Format That Inspires

A strong story gives readers something meaningful to connect with and library teams plenty to build on. When selecting a title, consider the conversations, activities, and connections it might inspire.

Schools might incorporate the book into classroom discussions, writing assignments, art projects, or schoolwide activities. Public libraries could host book clubs, family programs, author events, creative workshops, community conversations, or activities connected to the story’s themes.

Most importantly, pick a title that resonates with your community of readers. Whether that connection is based on a popular theme, local interest, or the experience of a specific age group, aligning your pick with your readers’ interests will increase engagement and make planning easier.

Make Participation Easy for Staff and Readers with Beanstack

Even the most exciting program can lose momentum if participation feels complicated. Pairing your one book program with a Beanstack challenge can add structure, boost engagement, and simplify planning and data collection.

With Beanstack, you can:

  • Create a clear path to participation: Give readers one place to access the shared link, view goals, complete activities, earn badges, and follow the community's progress.

  • Keep engagement going: Promote related events, reinforce key messages, and celebrate milestones throughout the program.

  • Simplify tracking: Monitor participation and reading progress in one place, making it easier to understand engagement and share results.

Together, Comics Plus and Beanstack create a connected experience that makes it easier for readers to access the book, join the program, and stay engaged.

In Action: Salem Church Middle School’s All-School Read

At Salem Church Middle School in Virginia, head librarian Danielle Schafer used Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova (Yen Press) for a schoolwide reading program. She built the program around four goals: fostering community, supporting curriculum, inspiring creativity, and building teacher and administrator buy-in.

Danielle chose a title readers could relate to, then created activities that connected its themes to their own school community. Students read the graphic novel during enrichment periods, supported by discussion questions, lessons, and related activities. After finishing the book, students wrote persuasive letters to the principal answering the question, “What club would you start and why?”

The program delivered measurable results:

  • 920 essays written

  • 16 new clubs created

  • 235 students joined a club in the first year, growing to 450 the following year

The impact extended beyond participation. Teachers and administrators saw firsthand how graphic novels could support curriculum, strengthen engagement, and inspire meaningful action.

Every school or public library program will look different, but Salem Church Middle School shows what can happen when a shared story is paired with clear goals, thoughtful programming, and opportunities for readers to shape their community.
